While AWP has been developing in the America’s for the last 20 years, it has largely been insulated from other regions, especially Southeast Asia. However, thanks to the introduction of Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) methodologies, large scale capital projects in the region are now implementing AWP in South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. Powered by WorkPacks – an application designed to streamline construction projects from early planning through commissioning and startup – these projects are seeing significant productivity increases. WorkPacks is revolutionizing construction in the APAC region through its advanced features for automated package generation and alignment of necessary deliverables from engineering and procurement to support a construction driven schedule. Bringing AWP to a New Region While the development of AWP methodology was largely influenced by projects in north America, WorkPacks was designed to facilitate the implementation of AWP and expand its benefits to projects on a global level, knowing full well that when benefits are realized, methodologies are adopted. The need for real-time, integrated project management tools is more critical than ever within the APAC Region, and WorkPacks is meeting that need head-on. By providing a unified platform for data integration and automated work package generation and development, WorkPacks ensures that all stakeholders have access to the most current information, enabling more effective collaboration and decision-making. While the incorporation of WorkPacks within these project’s technology stacks facilitate a more effective process for implementing AWP across the entire project, one strategy used on two of these projects has been to start with workface planning and automating the generation and development of Installation Work Packages. The Need for Technologically Agnostic Automation in Complex Projects Construction projects in the APAC region are often characterized by their broad range of diversity within smaller geographical areas, increasing the need for technologically agnostic digital solutions. WorkPacks has the ability to consume, validate, and transform data from any third party, and create custom flows to suit an extensive variety of processes, making it an well suited for the region in terms of ease of implementation across various projects in addition to the benefits gained from streamlining and automating complex operations. AWP was designed as a solution to solve the universal issues caused by increasing scale and complexity – numerous contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders, all with their own digital application suites spread across different countries. Coordinating these efforts manually can be incredibly time-consuming and prone to errors, leading to delays and increased costs – especially with project teams spread across distant time zones. For example, while two of these projects currently implementing AWP and WorkPacks are being constructed in Saudi Arabia, the teams tasked for planning, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring increased project productivity (those utilizing WorkPacks and spearheading AWP initiatives) are based in South Korea. WorkPacks addresses these challenges by facilitating collaboration across remote teams and automating the generation of installation work packages (IWPs), constraint identification & closeout, and ensuring the project is managed efficiently and accurately. Automated Package Generation: Precision and Efficiency One of the most significant features of WorkPacks is its ability to automatically generate, transform, and transfer information into each IWP as information is received from engineering and procurement. For example, the projects led by the South Korean AWP team has configured a digital thread to automatically pull the IDF/PCF files from their engineering application generating the isometric spools, enabling the automatic consumption of the IDF/PCF files into WorkPacks. Other digital threads update the engineering status visualizations and place the necessary data in the corresponding IWPs while updating IWP constraints. This is just one example within a suite of digital threads which ensures all necessary documentation, materials, and instructions are included in the work packages, reducing the risk of errors that can occur with manual processes. These projects are now able to integrate data from all stakeholders into a consolidated data pool and automatically validate that data, then generate and distribute IWPs – a process which is a true game-changer. It ensures that all parties are contributing to the same set of vetted instructions, reducing the potential for miscommunication and ensuring that work progresses smoothly. This automation of package generation not only streamlines the workflow but also enhances collaboration across teams, ensuring that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals. This is particularly important in the APAC region, where projects often involve complex supply chains and require close coordination between various parties. Advancing the Industry with Automated Solutions The introduction of automated package generation through WorkPacks is advancing the construction industry in the APAC region, setting new standards for efficiency and accuracy worldwide. These projects are not just adopting AWP for the first time—they are leading the way in demonstrating how automation can transform construction management, improving outcomes for all stakeholders involved. As these projects progress, they are likely to inspire other construction initiatives in the region to adopt similar methodologies, further advancing the industry. The success of these projects will serve as a testament to the significance of stakeholder alignment and automation in construction, highlighting the benefits of process efficiency and the impact of data precision, automation, and orchestration. WorkPacks is revolutionizing construction project management in the Asia-Pacific region through its advanced features for automated package generation. By automating the creation and customization of installation work packages, WorkPacks is enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of construction projects, ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget. These projects continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, setting a new benchmark for the industry – especially focused on stakeholder alignment and automated package generation and development. As these projects continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, they are setting a new benchmark for the industry, proving that with the right tools, the most complex construction challenges can be overcome with ease.
